The microbiome is essential to health, immune function, and plays a major role in the communication between the gut and the brain. Over the past few years scientists have begun to understand the importance of the microbiome in the context of brain function. Studies show that the gut-brain axis (gut-brain connection) is deeply linked with numerous aspects of cognition including mood, memory, and brain health. By targeting the gut-brain axis with key probiotic strains we’re able to activate a positive immune response in the brain while improving cognitive function at any stage of life.

Probiotics are the healthy microbes our gut needs to function at its best. Within the gut is a vast and diverse “rainforest” of hundreds of different bacterial organisms. Over the past 5 years over 4,000 studies have investigated the link between the health of the gut microbiome and the health of the human brain. We’ve long known the gut’s role in immune function and digestion, but only in recent years have scientists discovered the powerful connection between gut and mind. Of all the studies looking at the gut-brain axis, researchers have identified 4 key strains that have been proven to unlock benefits related to mood, memory, brain health, and higher level cognitive functions.

With the probiotics found in Brainbiotic™ you can support your brain while supporting your gut at the sametime.

Lactobacillus Plantarum

L. Plantarum is a beneficial and versatile probiotic strain, able to survive stomach acid with ease, allowing it to reach the colon fully active and intact. Here, the probiotic strain is effective at maintaining, restoring, and balancing the gut microbiota.

Studies have shown that L. Plantarum can support long-term memory by increasing levels of the all-star brain growth hormone, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).  The culture has also been shown to improve cognitive abilities in rats by lowering pressure and exerting neuroprotective properties in brain cells. [1]

Regular consumption of L. Plantarum may also reduce anxiety. The strain was found to increase levels of dopamine and serotonin while reducing anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, and inflammatory cytokines associated with mental and physical stress. [2 3]

L. Plantarum also plays a key role in regulating inflammation. Daily supplementation was found to reduce production of inflammatory cytokines and reduce oxidative stress in animal models [4].

L. Plantarum supports the health and survival of brain cells by suppressing activation of the protein NF-κB, the single most important regulator of inflammation in the body and brain. NF-κB inhibition is linked with brain growth and development. More specifically, inhibition of this protein is associated with improved learning, intelligence, neural plasticity, and memory. synaptic plasticity, BDNF levels are also increased, which enhances cognitive function and the growth of new neurons. [5, 6, 7]

Lactobacillus Brevis

L. Brevis is one of the most well-studied probiotic strains known to influence human health and cognition. The predominant culture in sauerkraut and pickled vegetables, this strain is well known to increase immune function and fight bacterial infection, in addition to its unique effects on the central nervous system.

L. Brevis provides support against inflammatory compounds associated with impaired memory and cognitive decline. It is one of the essential probiotics for brain health because it increases levels of BDNF, the brain’s all-star growth hormone that controls the health and growth of new neurons. In one study, old rats were given L. Brevis and young rats were given a placebo. The results found that in addition to lowering inflammatory markers TNF, IL1β, and NF-κB L. Brevis significantly increased expression of BDNF to levels greater than the healthy young rats. [8]

This suggests that L. Brevis may restore healthy brain function in elderly populations, possibly to levels greater than healthy young individuals.

L. Brevis has also been shown to have a positive effect on reducing anxiety, depressive symptoms, and restoring a positive mood. [9]

Lactobacillus Helveticus & Bifidobacterium Longum

These are two of the most effective probiotic strains to promote a positive mood, reduce stress, and relieve anxiety and depressive symptoms.

In one study, consuming a mixture of three Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria strains for eight weeks significantly reduced depressive symptoms. The probiotic also reduced inflammation in the patients. [10]

A handful of other studies have examined how probiotics affect depressive symptoms in healthy subjects. In healthy people these strains have been found to reduce:

Symptoms of anxiety [11, 12, 13] Depressive symptoms [14] Psychological distress [15] Academic stress [16] Researchers also found that taking probiotics reduced participants’ negative thoughts associated with a sad mood. [17]

features a blend of natural prebiotics to encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria (such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli). Research suggests that the compounds in Prebiotic+™ can improve gut and overall health.

The benefits may include optimal digestion, increased metabolism, and deeper sleep.†

How it Works:

Pro-biotics are the “good bacteria” that comprise our gut microbiome and are part of a healthy, fully-functioning digestive system.

Pre-biotics are a class of indigestible starchy plant fibers that promote gut and overall health by encouraging the growth of “friendly” gut flora (such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli). Resistant starches “resist” digestion and pass through the digestive system largely intact until they reach the large intestine (the colon).

There, our gut bacteria ferment these prebiotics into short chain fatty acids acetate, propionate, and butyrate. These fatty acids help maintain proper pH in the gut, regulate blood sugar, increase satiety, and discourage the growth of “unfriendly” bacteria.

Unmodified Potato Starch & Green Banana Flour

In 2004, Nutrition & Metabolism found that “replacement of 5.4% of total dietary carbohydrate with RS significantly increased postprandial lipid oxidation and therefore could decrease fat accumulation in the long-term.” [1]

The American Journal for Clinical Nutrition found in 2005 that “dietary supplementation with resistant starch has the potential to improve insulin sensitivity.” [2]

The American Physiological Society found that “interactions between RS and the colonic microflora appear to be of benefit to the host in the short and long term. ” [3]

The results of a study from 2015 published in The International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health showed that a single dose of resistant starch from green banana flour not only improved the glucose response after a meal in both lean and overweight individuals, but it improved glucose and insulin levels for 48 hours [4].

In 2009, the Journal of Physiology and Biochemistry found that Inulin FOS contributes to a wide range of health improvements: “FOS have important beneficial physiological effects such as low carcinogenicity, a prebiotic effect, improved mineral absorption and decreased levels of serum cholesterol.” [5]

The Canadian Journal of Microbiology published a paper finding that “fructooligosaccharides represent a prebiotic fiber that supports the growth of a wide range of probiotic cultures and as such has a potential to improve the successfulness of probiotic treatments” [6]

InulinFOS can also improve the pH balance of the digestive system, by creating greater levels of the short chain fatty acid butyrate, according to a paper in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics: “Butyrate concentrations were higher in patients receiving the FOS/fibre enriched formula compared to standard formula” [7]

A 2013 study in Autophagy found that trehalose enhances autophagy in motoneurons, thereby slowing the progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease: “At the mechanistic level, trehalose treatment led to a significant upregulation in the expression of key autophagy-related genes at the mRNA level… Consistent with these changes, trehalose administration enhanced the nuclear translocation of FOXO1, an important transcription factor involved in the activation of autophagy in neurons.” [8]

Current Drug Targets published a paper in 2014 that trehalose has unique neuroprotective properties: “Mounting experimental evidence suggests that trehalose may prevent neurodegenerative disorders by stabilizing proteins and promoting autophagy.” [9]

In a 2005 paper published in Neurobiology of Disease reported that “trehalose, a simple disaccharide, has been shown to be effective in preventing the deactivation of numerous proteins and in protecting cells against stress.” [10]

Ceylon Cinnamon

Cinnamon has been researched extensively over the years and is well known for its antiinflammatory properties. In 2012, The Journal of Traditional Complementary Medicine published research that found that “after chemical profiling of cinnamon's components, their biological activities including antimicrobial, antiviral, antioxidant, antitumor, anti-hypertension, antilipemic, antidiabetes, gastroprotective and immunomodulatory were reported by many investigators.” [11]

The European Journal of Clinical Investigation noted in 2006 that in people suffering from type 2 diabetes, “subjects with a higher initial plasma glucose level may benefit more from cinnamon intake… The cinnamon extract seems to have a moderate effect in reducing fasting plasma glucose concentrations in diabetic patients with poor glycemic control.” [12]

According to research published in The Proceedings of Nutrition Society’s 2008 publication, “Subjects with the metabolic syndrome who consume an aqueous extract of cinnamon have been shown to have improved fasting blood glucose, systolic blood pressure, percentage body fat and increased lean body mass.” [13

Lacto P. offers robust probiotic support against inflammatory compounds associated with impaired memory and cognitive decline. The strain has also been shown to increase BDNF to support the health and growth of new brain cells.

This unique strain is known to increase levels of the all-star brain growth hormone, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Higher levels of BDNF are associated with increased intelligence, positive mood, productivity, memory, as well as a decreased risk of various neurodegenerative mental states.

Daily use of this strain has been shown to support gut bacteria associated with positive mood states. The cultures accomplish this by relieving stress-related gut inflammation and increasing production of calming neurotransmitters in the gut to support a positive mood and relieve stress.
